Poems by Dannye Romine Powell

Foreword Magazine Book of the Year (Poetry) 2003, Finalist

SEBA Best Book of the Year (Poetry) 2003, Finalist

University of Arkansas Press Poetry Series

Dannye Romine Powell writes of marriage, parenthood, and temptation-of love in its many forms. Her lyrical, imagistic poems bring into sudden focus the subtle shifts of understanding and emotion within intimacy. In her reworking of the primal story of Eve and Adam and throughout all the poems, she elucidates how everyday life can sustain a family or sunder it. With clarity and care, she illuminates the world.

  Startled by Green

I pull the mango low
so my father's camera
can better catch
its muscled ripeness,
its sunrise skin.
My son, who is five,
slips in beside me. He wears
a striped shirt and aims high
his model airplane.

After my father dies
I find that photo in his desk,
and by December light
it seems new and bold-
June's uncanny green,
sun climbing the neighbor's wall,
the boy's grin a tease,
insisting he'll never go wrong,
and all that fruit suspended midair.
