In the state’s early days, Arkansans answered the call to war as Americans prepared to fight against Mexico. In another story, a wounded Civil War soldier stumbles onto a homestead after a battle at Poison Springs, forever changing the family there. In 1875, Arkansans are forced to take sides in the Brooks-Baxter War, involving two men each claiming to be the governor of Arkansas. Though the characters are imaginary, their settings and the challenges they faced are real.

Steven Teske works on the staff of the Encyclopedia of Arkansas History & Culture at the Butler Center for Arkansas Studies, located in the Arkansas Studies Institute in Little Rock. He is also an adjunct instructor for the Arkansas State University–Beebe campus located at the Little Rock Air Force Base in Jacksonville.
