Wartime history of Arkansans
brought to life in short stories
From the Mexican War to modern combat in the Middle East,
Arkansans have been part of America’s struggle to maintain
democracy and keep the peace at home and around the globe.
Now, young readers can live this history in Homefront
Arkansas: Arkansans Face Wartime.
Written by historians Velma B. Branscum Woody and Steven Teske,
the nine stories in Homefront Arkansas provide a
factual and compelling backdrop for Arkansas’s history
as seen through its conflicts. Fascinated readers will follow
Arkansans into battle and see its effects on them as well
as their loved ones back home.
In the state’s early days, Arkansans answered the call
to war as Americans prepared to fight against Mexico. In another
story, a wounded Civil War soldier stumbles onto a homestead
after a battle at Poison Springs, forever changing the family
there. In 1875, Arkansans are forced to take sides in the
Brooks-Baxter War, involving two men each claiming to be the
governor of Arkansas. Though the characters are imaginary,
their settings and the challenges they faced are real.
